Prioritizing Affordable Housing in Hampton Roads

March 14 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

If you’re trying to buy a home in Hampton Roads, it’d be more affordable to get a new job in Northern Virginia and try your luck there.

That’s according to an analysis WHRO did as part of a Pulitzer Center-grant funded series of stories on housing affordability.

The Pulitzer Center for Crisis Reporting and WHRO will host a panel discussion about the various issues identified throughout the series, including solutions to make housing more affordable, how we got here and what happens if affordability isn’t addressed.

65 Hall Road, Hampton

The panel will be moderated by WHRO News Director Mechelle Hankerson with guests:

  • Ava Gabrielle-Wise, Executive Director of The New Road Community Group of Exmore, one of the only community redevelopment groups in the country created and operated like this
  • Janita Rucker, a Real Estate Broker, is founder, CEO and Principal Broker of Rucker Realty. She imagines that anyone with a desire to own is also deserving of the opportunity to own property.
  • Jeff South, freelance Virginia data journalist and retired professor who helped WHRO reporters identify and analyze data related to affordability;
  • Todd Walker is CEO and President of Judeo-Christian Outreach Center, which serves people experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity and recently announced the private funding and building of 38 transitional housing units.

The panel is free, but registration is required.
